But if you want a compact, macOS-based system that’s not a laptop to attach to a TV, a spare monitor, or even just a public informational display, the Mac mini has long been the Apple alpha and omega. Sure, you can still select between 21- and 27-inch iMac models (which we’d expect to gain the M1 CPU before too long, as well). The Mac mini remains the only true “small” Mac desktop. It's cheap for a reason, friends don't let friends regret. Therefore, these kind of units has a much higher rate of failure and extra warranty will bring the price up which is similar to a new unit. M1 iMac is out for 1 year (released 2021 Apr) and those display units have turned on 24/7 in store for the last year which means it's 8760 (24x7x365) hours of lifespan gone (LED has approx lifespan 30K to 60K hours). Lastly, open box items are 100% returns or display unit. In this case, warranty from Apple is gone but you can pay extra for BestBuy warranty program which I have no experience with. Moreover, do NOT expect the same APPLE repair quality from "Geek Squad", it's a much worse QC compare to Apple. Sometimes they are REPAIRED by third party other than APPLE. Those "Geek Squad" open box items may not be "open box" only. After years working in Apple Store, I am not sure this will be eligible for repairs.
